Music... more than just a good tune...

We all have music collections and songs that we love. But music is more than just a great tune, well it is for me. It opens memories of what that song means to me. Be it that there is a song that reminds you of a person, or there is certain songs that have lyrics that mean something. Well im exactly the same. I have songs that I can't actually listen to anymore because they bring back certain memories and wll make me cry. Not because the music is that bad that my ears are physically in pain, but because they take me to a place that wasnt necessarily better but was diferent, and I had different issues and problems to deal with. There is a certain song that reminds me of someone who was special in my life, and every so often I will hear it (usually while im in the car - thats where I spend most of my time listening to music), without any notice I will cry. Usually I have to change the radio station so I can concentrate on my driving. This used to be much worse when I worked in Leeds and every day had to sit in the car for about 2 hours to get to work and back. Its not just music though, im sure you have all had those conversations with collegues where you talk about the things you used to watch on telly as kids. The joys of "Button Moon", (who's of to visit mr. Spoon), "Thundercats", "Henry's Cat", "Cities of Gold".... etc etc... and why do we talk to each other about this, and think back with fond memories about this? Probably because it takes us back to a better place, where we had no responsibilities, we were completely dependant on our parents. These were the good times! Could it be that music has the same links, it takes us back to the good times? The times that we hold on to and think back to with all the good memories but not the bad ones? Im sure its more a "the grass is greener on the other side" theory, that is that when we are in a situation we think its not good and look for better, but then when you are in the other place, we remember the good times of the past. Some may call it a selective memory.... I will call it life.
